Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling
Mnemba is a small private island northeast of Matemwe. Day visitors do not go ashore. The trip is the reef around it: coral, parrotfish, and, on a good day, turtles. Boats leave from the north or northeast beaches. The crossing is shorter and calmer from that side; from Stone Town or the south it is a long transfer, and we will say if your hotel makes the day too heavy. Dolphins are sometimes met on the way. They are not the product, and we do not chase a pod that does not want the boat. Visibility is generally kinder from June to October and again in the northeast-monsoon calm, but every week is its own weather.

Questions
Do we go onto Mnemba island?
No. The island is private. The reef is the visit.
I am not a strong swimmer.
Life jackets are standard. Tell us anyway. If the sea is choppy we will not push a nervous swimmer over the side.
Which season is best?
Calmer, clearer water is more likely outside the long rains. We still check the week you are here.
